Also know as Hidden Valley, this geothermal wonderland sits between Rotorua and Taupo on the Waikato River at Lake Ohakuri. The Silica Terraces that greet you at the base of Orakei Koroako are believed to be the largest of their kind. You will see 23 active natural geysers and a number of boiling hot springs and mud pools as you walk the park.
This is an ever changing world inhabited by a variety of native flora and fauna. A highlight of the walk is the Ruatapu Cave or “the sacred hole”. The cave reaches 120 ft. down to a natural and stunningly blue hot pool called Waiwhakaata, which means pool of mirror. This sacred place was used by Maori woman to bath and beautify themselves for ceremonies.
One of New Zealand’s top visited volcanic attractions, Lonely Planet Guide has said, “Orakei Korako is possibly the best thermal area left in New Zealand and one of the finest in the world.” You can book your tickets to Orakei Korako at the Taupo DeBretts Spa Resort reception desk.
The Volcanic Region of the Central Plateau is one of the most unique in the world. Taupo DeBretts Hot Springs is a leading geothermal attraction in this area. For over 120 these waters have been a favourite bathing spot of Maori’s, early settlers and tens of thousands of tourists and locals alike.
The rich mineral content and warm temperatures can heal many ailments from sore, tired muscles, skin conditions, improve circulation and eliminate toxins from the body. After a walk around the geothermal region, experience it first hand with a relaxing and therapeutic soak in one of the many natural warm mineral pools on offer at DeBretts.
